Well, we made it through another year, so here’s to us for persevering! May this New Year bring you lots of happy memories, an abundance of good health, and both personal and professional success.
Last quarter, as I was planning my goals for 2022, the word consistency kept popping up in my head. It is the word I will be using and calling upon all year long. With all the stops and starts we’ve experienced it was as if the universe was saying to me: “Yasenny, don’t worry about what’s going on around you, Just. Be Consistent.”
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, consistency is the “quality or fact of staying the same at different times.” Staying the same at different times? How does that translate into my work and home life? How do I become more consistent?
I stumbled upon a quote by Aristotle, which helped me see its meaning: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” So, I guess it’s time for me (and hopefully you too) to start creating a habit of consistency in our lives, and here are three ways to help us start becoming consistent:
- Have a plan. I talk about plans a lot. I truly believe having a plan is the only way to measure, monitor and mitigate what you want to accomplish. Planning is different than goal setting. Planning is how, when, and with what force you will use to complete something. If you want to see your social media followers increase you must plan your messages, and be consistent in posting them. Your plan serves as a tool that you regularly stick to in order to achieve your goals. Having a plan helps you create a habit of consistency.
- Take small bites and chew! Tackling big tasks is daunting, especially when you look at the 12 months in front of you. But, doing one or two small things daily and consistently will help to whittle away the enormous responsibilities you face. Doing a little everyday will add up to big results. If you are about to launch/market a new product or service, there are lots of moving parts that need your attention. You may get overwhelmed or want to throw in the towel, but before you give up simply focus on the next item on your plan, complete it, and move on to the next. In no time you will chip away at was once a mountain of tasks, and experience a sense of pride that you were able to conquer it!
- Say to yourself, “I AM DOING THIS!” By declaring your intention – in the here and now – you are commanding yourself to do just that…GETTING IT DONE! Psych yourself up while you are getting ready to start your day, and face your responsibilities head on. Do this little exercise every morning, and watch how your consistency pays off. Avoiding or putting off the things you don’t want to do, or the things you have convinced yourself are too hard will still be there tomorrow staring you in the face. So get it done now, and enjoy a better night sleep!
As a marketing consulting (entrepreneur) I am responsible for all aspects of my business. Some of these, like working with you, developing campaigns, and helping your business grow, are the best and most rewarding parts of my work. The other things like billing and payroll, tend to be tougher and not as fun for me. But, I know if I can stick to these steps and become consistent in doing the things I like and don’t like all of a sudden my responsibilities become less intimating, a little easier, and ultimately the reward is that they will be done!
